It's a matter of degree. Probably journalism was most government-skeptical in the 1970's. Things have changed since then. Greater consolodation within the media has resulted in a different structural relationship. Back then, there were more newspapers, and some were frankly liberal (especially economically liberal). But the diversity has shrunk and there are fewer media companies, and they are very rich.
An interesting question is which is more important to the MSM -- Leftism or antiestablishmentarianism. There was no way to know when the Right was in power. Now that the left has regained some power and the right is on the defensive, it's interesting to see the MSM position shift.
