Rumblings about a potential deal Obama may strike with Republicans:
On Tuesday afternoon, HuffPost asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney what Democrats who promised not to touch Social Security would tell their constituents if they voted for Obama's proposal.
"Let's be clear: This is something that the Republicans have asked for and as part of an effort to find common ground with Republicans, the president has agreed to put this in his proposal," replied Carney. "He has agreed to have this as part of a broad deficit reduction package that includes asking the wealthiest to pay more so that we can achieve the kind of revenue targets that are necessary to a balanced approach to deficit reduction."
They asked for something. Common ground.
What emerges could end up being extremely volatile. Expect a war between the "establishment" and the rest of us.
Cutting future SSA payouts when there's $2.6T in the trust fund PISSES me off.
Those funds are supposed to be spent down to the statutory minimum (one year's expenses, or $1T), this decade and next.
If they're not, this chained-CPI jazz will have resulted in the THEFT of the amount remaining from FICA payers who were made to over-contribute into SSA 1989-2009.
Plus this is stupid because Republicans are going to run against Democrats who voted to cut social security, just like the ran to protect Medicare from Democrats' cuts in 2010.
If we've got a budget problem, it's because of the damn wars and tax cuts. Rescind the tax cuts and raise taxes more to pay for the wars.
But that would require honest from the system and the electorate.
We're not honest enough to run a straight economy.
This place is going to get really bad (ie worse than now) eventually. Maybe not Soylent Green bad, but bad.
It has always been a war between the people and the establishment. That's been explicit for years, decades, centuries.
On Social Security, just look at this George Carlin routine:
"The real owners, the big wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions. Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have owners. ...
"They want obedient workers. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork and just dumb enough to passively accept these increasingly shitty jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it. And now they're coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street."
So it's the old Vote O'Bama, Quote O'Bama...The Republicans made me do it!
