Republicans give BP lots of love:

Here, here, here.

I don't get it. What constituency is rooting for BP?

BP can't pay to restore the Gulf of Mexico if it goes bankrupt and out of business. It is so simple. If we want them to be there for the next 10 years remediating the damage, then they have to stay in business and stay profitable so that they have the financial capacity to do so.

What if they simply went bankrupt and the ships sailed away with the well openly gushing? The people hell-bent on putting them out of business as fast as they can with lawsuits and boycotts haven't seemed to take that into consideration.

"What constituency is rooting for BP?"

1. British Petroleum (BP) bribes Republican politician (RP) in the form of campaign contributions. RP shows gratitude to BP by working to pass laws deregulating the oil industry.

2. BP rewards RP with more campaign contributions.

3. Disaster in the Gulf. RP bows to public pressure, publicly denounces BP.

4. BP retaliates by withholding campaign contributions and supporting RP's primary challenger, who promises to do BP's bidding. RP loses seat in Congress.

It's really very simple.
