Go Michael Steele!In the news: Under Chairman Michael Steele, the Republican National Committee has been using controversial mailers posing as official Census documents to raise money. “Calling itself the ‘Congressional District Census,’ the letter comes in an envelope starkly printed with the words, ‘DO NOT DESTROY OFFICIAL DOCUMENT’ and describes itself, on the outside of the envelope, as a ‘census document,’” notes Politico. Although the mailers have been used before, they were heavily criticized this year because they coincide with the actual Census; many observers worried that people would confuse the two. Yesterday, the House voted 416-0 to ban “misleading mailings designed to appear they’re from the Census Bureau”:The legislation passed 416-0, after two Republicans who sit on the House panel overseeing the census, Rep. Darrell Issa of California and Jason Chaffetz of Utah, agreed to co-sponsor the measure. Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., has said he intends to move forward with legislation in the Senate. Steele recently defended the mailers, saying, “If it’s against the law, I won’t [send them]. Until such time, this is an aggressive fundraising season.” Here's the deal. The mailers will go to Republicans. As a rsult, some of those people will not return the official census form. That means Republicans will be underrepresented when congressional districts are redrawn, and they will get fewer federal dollars for infrastructure and the like.

So is the GOP going to get rid of Steele before he does any more lasting damage, or would it appear unseemly if the Party of Rich White Men gave their token black leader the axe in the midst of an election year?
I knew he was bad news when he started talking about using "hip hop" to spread the conservative message. Young people are desperately looking for adult leadership and Steele is not it.
Michael Steele is "hep" and in dire need of a "hip" transplant. "Hop" to it, dude.
He's so "hip" he has trouble seeing over his pelvis...

I got that mailer a few weeks back and I am no Republican. Not being too old I quickly realized it was a fundraising scam; but in fifteen years I could see being confused. I had a blast with it. Got out a magic marker and responded to all the leading loaded dumb ass questions. Too long ago to remember, but questions went like - do you want lower taxes or no taxes? I would write that we are waging a global war on terror and it is our patriotic duty to pay more taxes. Should have copied my work. I thought it was brilliant at the time. I hope whoever opened up my envelop enjoyed my work.
