Michael Gerson is an idiot:

Not much to add to this:
A president is expected to be a patriotic symbol himself, not the arbiter of patriotic symbols. He is supposed to be the face-painted superfan at every home game; to wear red, white and blue boxers on special marital occasions; to get misty-eyed during the most obscure patriotic hymns.
Yup, nothing like (literally!) wearing the flag the night of a wedding anniversary.

Patriotic: Wearing a lapel pin.

Unpatriotic: Preserving, protecting, or defending the constitution, without a lapel pin.

Not to forget that it violates the flag code. But these days a lot of violations of that have become effectively mandatory, i.e. people are smeared as unpatriotic, if they do not (ab)use the flag as a prop or advertizing material.
For the record: I find flag worship sickening on principle and think that the pledge of allegiance has it the wrong way around (i.e. flag first place and the republic second place).
I wait for the day that the NRA demands that all bullets are painted with the flag [/snark]

Gerson no doubt is dreaming about Bush flying his patriotic boxers on his rigid staff.
