Back in 1950 about this time of year, I was taking a "Speech" course at collge here in the Boston area as part of a pre-law program. The instructor had an Irish surname. Class that day featured extemporaneous speaking. So the instructor, with the smile of a leprechaun, called on Mario from Lawrence, MA to talk on what St. Patrick's Day meant to him. Mario stepped to the front of the class:

"What does St. Patrick's Day mean to me? Well, you can get drunk and have a good time and not worry about getting arrested here in Boston because all the cops are Irish and they're drunk too. But other than that they should do away with it and celebrate Columbus Day twice a year."

Many years later Boston boasts an Italian-American Mayor Menino. No, his first name isn't Mario.
