Benazir Bhutto often appeared with a white head-scarf, and to a certain degree, it makes her look like the stereotypical image of the Virgin Mary.
There seems to be a substantial amount of empathy here in the United States towards Benazir, and perhaps this contributed in a small way.


Um, many of us who've been Benezir fans over the years are neither Catholic nor Muslim.

laurie: Yes, I agree. But I was struck by the similarity - especially since she was wearing a white head-scarf recently.

She's been doing that since at least the '80s. I think the analogy with the virgin Mary is more than a little stretch.
