This is delusional, if true:

Sidney Blumenthal reports in Salon:
As explained to me by several senior State Department officials, Rice is entranced by a new "domino" theory: Israel's attacks will demolish Hezbollah; the Lebanese will blame Hezbollah and destroy its influence; and the backlash will extend to the Palestinians' Hamas, which will collapse. From the administration's point of view, the Israel-Lebanon conflict is a proxy war with Iran (and Syria) that will inexplicably help turn around Iraq.
If that's what Rice & Co. are betting on, you can write off Iraq right now.

It's nothing more than a fantasy, one that gets you out of a hole. It's on a par with fevered thoughts just before finals week at college. The student who hasn't studied at all, hopes an earthquake will strike, postponing the tests and discombobulating the professors, who in turn give everybody a passing grade.

I read an article recently where people were complaining about Rice's incompetence. I wondered if she was being set up as the fall guy for grosser incompetence throughout the administration. But if she really believes that, then she's a much bigger idiot than I'd realized. She ought to be fired.

I wrote of Iraq quite some time ago.

Domino Theory?! Domino Theory!?

That was disproven by history after we lost the Vietnam war. These delusional fools learned nothing and now want a replay of their disastrous policies in a more dangerous world with bigger troop deployments. It's all good as long as their asses ain't on the line.

God help us. Please.

Yeah, I like the very first item, the idea that Israel can "destroy Hezbollah." Um, yeah, sure. Right. Er, destroying a guerrilla organization is just a tad more difficult than tossing a few bombs their way. This not something that's easy to do. History is littered with examples of foes that weren't that easy to dispose of.

I hope Blumenthal is wrong, and this administration is not THAT incompetant. Because, if they really think the domino thing will happen, it dwarfs all of their other incompetant moments.

Egad, that is frightening. Very often these days, I hear stories about what this administration's thinking is. I am often shocked at how colossally stupid it is, and can't believe they are that dumb. But then I look at their actions, and conclude that they probably are. Perhaps dumb is the wrong word: "willfully deluded" or "rigidly unmoved by developments in reality" seems closer to the mark.
