Singularity - hear all about it!

A friend of mine has a report on "singularity" (merger of man & machine) over at NPR. Give it a listen.

It used to be called "the coming convergence".

We will all be connected.
Our biological and technoloical uniqueness will be absorbed into the collective. Resistance is futile.

Well, I keep hoping that science and technology will somehow solve most of our social problems but I don't think it's very likely.

Here's a scenario for you. Let's say the Pentagon starts taking this 'singularity' thing seriously and it becomes obvious that America will not be the first nation to achieve it. How do they react? If we can't invent it first, will we prevent anyone else from ever being able to create it? That would pretty much require a nuclear exchange of global propotions. Visions of Armageddon are dancing in my head...

Actually, the Singularity is the term for a future time at which point things will be changing so rapidly that we are presently unable to comprehend how this future world will work.

For example, the law of supply and demand might no longer work. Or we might have an entirely robotic work force, from CEO down to janitor.

Transhumanism is often strongly associated with this, but not always.
