The threat the United States is facing is ...
that Al Qaeda will take control of Iraq!
Or at least that's what Bush wants you to believe (transcript
). Iraq is hardly governable and Bush expects us to believe that Bin Laden and his crew will control a spinning-out-of-control state.
We're back to Reason One for the war in Iraq: To stop the 9/11 terrorists.
From Bush's speech:
- "evil" mentioned 6 times
- "terror" (& variants) mentioned 31 times
- "kill" (& variants) mentioned 13 times
- "radical" (& variants) mentioned 23 times
- "Bin Laden" mentioned 5 times
That has nothing to do with the present Sunni/Shia/Kurd logjam. Who is buying this nonsense? Limbaugh was full of praise this morning for Bush's "leadership" but a caller to O'Reilly had had enough. She said that Bush misleads, we're stuck in Iraq, that it's a waste of time, money, and men. (O'Reilly noncommital except to bitch about liberals).
"The militants believe that controlling one country will rally the Muslim masses, enabling them to overthrow all moderate governments in the region and establish a radical Islamic empire that expands from Spain to Indonesia."
This is unreal. Does Bush's speech reflect the opinion of anybody
in the administration?
It's got to be PR. Got to be. Nobody can be that foolish.
It's all smoke. Like Capone, Bush is a chintzy criminal who is stealing everything he can get under the cover of war.
Wait, doesn't that describe the administration's strategy nearly word for word?
"The militants believe that controlling one country will rally the ... masses, enabling them to overthrow all ... governments in the region and establish a [hegemony of allied puppet governments] that expands from Spain to Indonesia."
Well, now, wait a minute: from Spain to Indonesia doesn't include us - so I guess we shouldn't worry much.
'Tho, as Jeremy notes, that puts Islam in direct competition for the same empire WE want.
Now Rev. Pat Robertson thinks that Al Qaeda is taking over Venezuela. I saw a right-wing blog claim he was training islamic terrorists! That may be the next Bush speech.
When is the stupid corporate media in this country going to stop putting that moron on TV every time they announce a speech or news conference? He never says anything important except when he misspeaks, so we might as well keep watching Anderson Cooper or Filthy Rich Cattle Drive (probably a big fave at the White House).
Maybe if Al Qaida took over Iraq it would be more competent at it than we are....
