This is why the response is slow:

Over at THE NEWS BLOG, there is a post which has a picture of Bush being briefed by FEMA head Michael Brown yesterday (Friday).

They got a table. They got maps on the table. Maps of the terrain. And a weather map. A five day old weather map.

Rotated, enlarged, and stretched

When planning operations, a weather map showing current (or likely future) conditions is what you want. The weather map on the table is of no use. It's not fine-grained and focused on southern Louisiana-Mississippi-Alabama. It's just a gross view of the Gulf of Mexico from Sunday.

If FEMA is using five-day old maps, no wonder it took them five days to get supplies to the New Orleans Convention Center!

I would love to hear audio of what they were saying. It's probably completely trite.

I hope the real people making real decisions just gave them a useless map for their photo-op. I sure wouldn't trust anyone in that picture to make any real decisions when lives are in the balance.

It is just a prop -- Bush is not a real President -- he just plays one on TV.

Uhm, if you want to see where the storm damage occurred, it might be helpful to look at a map of where the storm travelled.

There's plenty of good reasons to shred Bush. This isn't one.

But the question still remains Ray, why did he have to travel to NO to be briefed? Could not have happened before? And why is there press at a briefing, never normally happens...

Notice the tail rotor of the chopper in the right background. Not out rescuing Americans but stood down to be a Presidential prop.

Ray:

First of all, that's not a map of where the storm traveled. It shows Katrina about 4 hours before it hit New Orleans (I've got a collection of NOAA images and that's the best match). Look closely and you'll see that the eye is still out in the Gulf of Mexico, in a line between Tampa Bay, FL and Corpus Christi, TX.

Second, we know that they've been staging phony photo ops. See Kevin Drum for details.

Third, you expect me to pass up an opportunity where there is a five day delay in operations and, at the same time, Bush and the FEMA head are looking at five day old maps?

I would love to hear audio of what they were saying.

Bush wants to know if he can get future photos in cornflower blue.

Brown: 'Isn't that a pretty horse? I ain't seen a prettier horse in years.'
Bush: 'Me scared of horses!'
