Medved and the clown show: This morning, the right-wing radio talk show hosts were parroting Bush's claim that the war in Iraq is a legitimate response to 9/11. O'Reilly said he has proof of connections between al Qaeda and Saddam. Prager talked endlessly about Saddam giving $25K to terrorists. But the winner for absurdity is Michael Medved. In the first half hour of his show he dismissed Pelosi's charge that Bush was wrong to invoke 9/11. Medved said there was a connection. His proof? On the day that Saddam's statue was pulled down:- The U.S. flag that was draped over the statue's head was at the the Pentagon on 9/11.
- The Marines (who draped the flag) understood there was a connection between 9/11 and the war in Iraq.
- The American people understood there was a connection between 9/11 and the war in Iraq.
Boy, do we wish we had recorded Medved (perhaps Media Matters will have it). How about that? A flag that was at the Pentagon on 9/11 is sent to Baghdad and used as a prop to celebrate military success in the Iraq War. By Medved's logic, that shows a connection between al Qaeda terrorists and Iraq. It sounds incredible, but that's what Medved said. UPDATE: The "9/11-Saddam" charge is not limited to talk radio. Via Yglesias (& Ezra Klein) we learn that a congressman claims to have secret evidence that there was a connection: A Republican congressman from North Carolina told CNN on Wednesday that the "evidence is clear" that Iraq was involved in the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001.
"Saddam Hussein and people like him were very much involved in 9/11," Rep. Robin Hayes said. This nonsense cannot last much longer.

I would say that the obvious question for all these knowledgeable types is, "Why did you not say anything to the 9/11 Commission?" VKW
the weasal words are "people like him"
Re the "big lie". You can fool some of the people some of the time, but they're getting desperate now. The shocking thing is that most reporters knew that Bush intended to invade Iraq before 9/11, they just won't admit it. Wife and kids, paycheck etc.
"This nonsense cannot last much longer." Wish it were true. But it's sure to be superceded by some new nonsense, and wait and see, it'll pop up again. The NYT will resurrect Safire to tell the Prague story, or they'll find some new liar.
I unfortunately disagree that "This nonsense cannot last much longer." It'll last until at least early 2009 on the Federal level, and who knows how long in many of the states. Americans have lost the ability to think critically. Who knows, we could be leading the world into the next Dark Ages...
Yes, well the moron congresscritter from SC is probably referring to reports that Saddam _personally_ piloted BOTH planes that hit the WTC.
I, on the other hand, have secret evidence that said congresscritter has deviant sex with dead goats.
When Medved was doing the movie reviews, I couldn't believe how stupid he was. Well, I guess he could appear more stupid... I just had to wait a few years!
