0.000136 % Initial aid
pledged by the United States in the wake of the Indian Ocean tsunami: $15,000,000 ($15 million)
Total
GDP of the United States: $11,000,000,000,000 ($11 trillion)
That comes out to 0.000136 % - a little more than
one millionth of the GDP. In reaction to that pledge, Jan Egeland, the U.N. humanitarian aid chief called the United States 'stingy'.
Latest
news is that the aid has been increased to $35 million. That's much better. Now the aid is a whopping 0.000318 % of GDP
NOTE: The right-wing radio is going ape-shit over the 'stingy' remark. How dare anyone criticize the United States!

But of course they are bent out of shape over the stingy remark. The rest of world should take our invasions, occupations, aid, or indifference and just shut up. We are the most powerful nation in the world we can do whatever we want. At least that is the way certain conservatives think. They are arrogant so they think that the U.S. should act in the like manner.
Of course we're stingy, we need the money to armor our soldiers. Uh, wait . . .
In the time it took me to read your post, we spent $15 million in Iraq.
I read that the additional $20 million was a line of credit. Too bad the ATMs on the Indian coast are down....
$35 million? A lot for me, but doesn't our gov't spend a billion every week to devastate Iraq? $35 million? Don't a lot of CEOs make that much every year? I like the person who said "take our troops out of Iraq & send them to help Sri Lanka rebuild." I like the person who said "why isn't Bill Gates sending his plane over there to help?"
